Ed AndersonDriver Sales Representative Ed Anderson followed in his brother’s footsteps when he pursued professional driving in 1982. After spending a few years working various jobs, he wanted to establish a steady career and his older brother encouraged him to consider trucking.
“During high school I wanted to be doctor, but money got tight and I saw that my brother was doing well in the trucking industry. I gave it a try and now, almost 30 years later, I still think it was the right decision,” Ed said.
Ed admitted that life as a professional driver comes with its fair share of challenges. Over the years, however, he developed three rules that have kept him safe and accident free while behind the wheel.
“There are three safety rules that I follow every time I get in my truck. The first is preparation; you need to be ready for anything that you may encounter on the road and the only way to do that is to be 100% focused on driving. The second is expectation; you need to anticipate that you will encounter situations that will make it difficult to do your best and be ready to react to them. The third is execution; no matter what happens, you need to be able to get your job done right.”
Ed also credits good instincts with keeping him safe for all of these years, “It’s important to recognize that if something doesn’t feel right, it’s probably not. I always trust my instincts and it has kept me out of trouble this far.”
When asked what reaching two million miles means to him, Ed responded, “I was considering retirement, but when I found out how close I was, I wanted to stay on and reach this goal. Two million accident-free miles is a real achievement. I’m proud that Con-way has trusted me with their equipment and to serve their customers. It is a privilege to be recognized for my hard work.”
A resident of Memphis, Tenn., Ed is based out of Con-way Freight’s Memphis, Tenn., service center. He has two children: Corey, 35, Tamara, 30; and six grandchildren with his wife of 38 years, Phyllis. In his spare time, Ed enjoys playing basketball.
